Conversation Partners Needed
June 10th, 2008
The IEP will have a big summer program again this year, with large numbers of Chinese and Japanese students in addition to students from other countries coming to improve their English before beginning undergraduate classes in the fall. We would like to provide conversation partners and other listening & speaking opportunities for these students. Please announce the conversation partner program to your summer students and encourage them to sign up. Faculty and staff are also welcome to sign up to be conversation partners. If you know students who are in Conway this summer but are not taking classes, please pass the word along to them as well.
To register for a conversation partner, go to Torreyson Library West 316 and ask Peggy Braden or a student worker for a form to fill out. The form is also online at www.uca.edu/iep/ on the left side of the page or at the bottom (fill it out online and either send it to me as an attachment or print it out and send it to me at my address below). Conversation partners commit to meeting with an international student at least once a week for an hour throughout the 10-week summer session.
Faculty, if you're teaching a class this summer that could be paired up with one of our IEP classes for an interview project, please let me know. This is very beneficial for our students in that they are able to meet American students one-on-one or in small groups. Good candidates for this kind of project would be writing, speech, geography, anthropology, etc. We have paired our classes up with business communication classes and even interior design classes. Anything that gets our students talking is good.
Last but not least, if you know about any events on campus this summer--lectures, presentations, concerts, films, etc.--please let me know. We are planning to take the students to see "Romeo and Juliet" during the Arkansas Shakespeare Festival!
If any other ideas have come to mind while you're reading this message, please jot them down and let me know. We are open to almost any project on which our students can collaborate with native English speakers in or outside the classroom and anything that gets them listening to and speaking English outside the classroom.
Thanks for reading!
